About me

Heyyo! My name is Plantboy - well that's my artists name - my actual name is Irvin but you can call me whatever!

I'm a 23-year-old, Mexican-American multimedia artist from Chicago, IL, raised in the wonderful neighborhood of Pilsen. I graduated from Columbia College-Chicago with my BA in Communication and Minor in Journalism. Currently I'm pursuing my Masters in Art Education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

For me, art is not just a hobby, but an extension of my political and self expression. My love of nature and plants is rooted in my philosophy and hope to see a greener, cleaner planet in the wake of the climate crisis; and my mission through my art is to respons to contemporary problems here in Chicago and nationwide.

Plantboy Origin

I began Plantboy on October 20th, 2019 after getting peer pressured into doing street art by a very good friend of mine. I had the design of Plantboy already developed - however the character had an abstract exressionist design that was to look realistic. So the transition between realism and abstract-expressionism through watercolor and acrylic painting as my main art mediums to cartoonism and street art in a short time was a huge shift.

But even in those different mediums, the themes of Plantboy has been constant. He is a character designed with a leaf over his head and, although looking human, Plantboy is not a human, he is a plant! Specifically an extreme case of an anthropomorphized golden pothos plant.

That's as far as his "street-art" lore has been developed.

However, if you're curious, Plantboy's lore is even more expanded in a current project called Covalria Sow.
